Civil Engineering Programme Area

Introduction

The undergraduate programmes in civil engineering and structural engineering have been developed to address the increasing and evolving requirements for qualified civil engineers in Brunei Darussalam. Each programme contains elements of both theoretical and practical nature, and emphasises on producing quality graduates equipped with sound analytical, problem-solving and transferrable skills necessary to embark on a successful career in civil engineering or other related profession.

The programmes aim to produce graduates who are equipped with intellectual, practical and managerial skills to develop civil engineering infrastructure and structures, with core technical competencies spanning structures, geotechnics, transport, water and environmental engineering. Together with an appreciation of the importance of sustainability, personal and professional development, teamwork and communication, the graduates are thus ready for professional roles in the construction industry, while having the versatility to work in other fields. The industrial placement between the third and fourth years provides valuable exposure of the industry and professional working practices to students, enhancing their personal and professional development.

Both programmes partially satisfy the required educational base for Chartered Engineers with the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom, and thus prepares the graduates to become professionally qualified civil and/or structural engineers.

Accreditation

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering programmes are both accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) on behalf of the UK Engineering Council.

Both programmes are both accredited for the purposes of fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng. See www.jbm.org.uk for further information and details of Further Learning programmes for CEng.
